RUN (RUŇ)

Masha Mаroz 2021 – 2022

This project is the result and generalization of many years of research into the Belarusian ethnic and archaic culture, presented in various forms and styles of women's clothing textiles. I tried to contribute to the development of the traditional heritage of my ancestors, protect it from folklorization, reveal the enormous potential for rethinking and integrate it into everyday life.

The project consists of 16 images. Each outfit is sewn in a single version without the possibility of repeating it in the same form. This is my way of expressing deep respect for the generation of old craftswomen whose products were always unique.

The structure and silhouettes of individual images are almost direct quotes from the authentic ones. The range of shades of fabrics and prints refers to the traditional color of folk clothing, to the water shimmers of my native Polesia, to summer flowering meadows full of life, to the colorful fabrics and ribbons that are wrapped around roadside crosses. In part of the costumes, I used the centuries-old rectangular structures characteristic of traditional shirts.

All photographs were taken by me in Polesie during an expedition trip in the spring of 2022.
