Born in the Belarusian town of Dubrovno (now a city in the Vitebsk region, Republic of Belarus).

He came to central Russia, where he became a carver and engraver.

He printed a Bible in pictures, similar to the Western "Poor Man's Bibles". It includes a series of colored engravings with captions on scenes from the Book of Genesis and the Apocalypse.
