Born in the city of Velizh , Vitebsk province (RSFSR, now the city of the Smolensk region of the Russian Federation), where he received his primary education in a male gymnasium.

He studied at the Vitebsk Art College under Kerzin.

Since that time he has taken part in art exhibitions .
1931
Graduated from the Leningrad Academy of Arts (now St. Petersburg Academy of Arts named after Ilya Repin). There he met his future wife, Olga Bembel-Dedok.
1947
He was one of the organizers and first teachers of the Minsk Art College .
1953
He taught at the Belarusian Theater and Art Institute (now the Belarusian State Academy of Arts).
1950-1954
He served as chairman of the Union of Artists of the BSSR (later the Belarusian Union of Artists).
1955
Awarded the title of People's Artist of the BSSR .
1982-1986
Second term as chairman of the Union of Artists of the BSSR.
October 13, 1986
Died in Minsk.
