I started my project after I bought an old photograph at the flea market in Salzburg. The photo, from the period during the war, captured my attention. The picture shows soldiers making gestures that for me do not say anything but were important for them at that time. It led me to think in two directions: first, about the special gestural language of war, which everybody had to learn and use without exception at a certain time, and second, about whether it is at all possible to understand all the emotions that emerge from the heritage of war and what role is played by official memorialization and filtration of the memory of war today and whether it is possible to comprehend this experience with the aim of avoiding war in the future.
