Betrothal to the Sea

Maria-Elena Bonet 2023

I perceive the path to freedom through the discovery of humanity, which is a natural state received at birth, but, unfortunately, is often lost. The calling to realize one's humanity as the main goal of modernity is a calling that a person cultivates in himself through interaction with the world. Having discovered the dignity of human existence, a person can no longer abandon the task of transforming himself.

My story of finding freedom began with a process of creation that emerged from nothing. It arose from what had burned within me in recent years. He arose from death. Just as at the river I learned to follow my soul, so at the sea I learned to turn pain into clean water. I learned to go into a wound and come back different. The sea is full of resurrection.

It was no coincidence that the Hel Peninsula became my alchemical laboratory. I associate this place with the ancient goddess Hel, who hugs the dead with a warm hand and the living with a cold one, connecting and caring for the two worlds as a single whole. Here I can be in my normal state, I can be alive and dead at the same time. Having been born in a country of millions of people buried alive, I share life with them, and questions about the meaning of this life become a daily practice under their gaze.

Hel collects and preserves our "bones", calling us to live in accordance with our own essence. Hel's presence in the project is expressed through transitional and alchemical phases.

Hel teaches us to bring back life and resurrect from the ashes. My creative tool is hand-held photography, which has similar properties. A photosensitive emulsion made from natural materials contains all the elements. The phases of photography reflect the cycles of nature and man. Every time in the process of creativity I go through birth and death. These states of human movement and development are metaphorically expressed through the properties of the Gum Bichromate process. According to legend, the phoenix egg was made from gum bichromate (acacia resin), and in photographic technology it is the main binding component. I combine it with charcoal and ash to create works of art. For exposure I turn to sunlight, and for developing photographs I turn to the sea. The sea symbolizes the power that can transform a person and reveal his true face. Through the process of manually developing photographs, which is shown in the film, I metaphorically interpret the spiritual formation of man.
