Ossip Zadkine began working as a stretcher-bearer in 1915 and made quick sketches of his daily experiences during the war. His drawings show barracks, shell craters, trenches, hospitals and mutilations. As a reward for his bravery during the First World War, he was granted French citizenship in 1921.
