"This performance refers to the story of Josaphat Kuntsevych - a saint and martyr of the Catholic Church who worked for the Greek Catholic Church in the present-day Belarus, in the 16th century. In this way, Pushkin evokes the Union of Brest - the event which brought together the lands that formed the Republic of Both Nations. kuntsevych, one of the detenders of the order established by the union, is symbolic of opposition against the Moscow rule. the procession commemorating the martyr is headed by the artist dressed in a worn robe and carrying the papal cross. As the procession progresses, Pushkin is approached by numerous people who pour paint on him out of buckets. The march finally reaches the river Daugava where the artist takes a seat in a boat. subsequently, together with the papal cross which had previously been burnt, the boat is pushed onto the water."
