Born in the city of Grodno (Russian Empire, today the Republic of Belarus) in a wealthy Jewish family.

1883

He entered the Imperial Academy of Arts as a volunteer, where he took all the courses, from drawings from plaster to field studies. Failed to complete the course.

1880-1890

He worked in St. Petersburg in the workshop of teaching aids, was engaged in book illustration, made reporter's sketches for the magazines "Artist" and "Petersburg Life". He created genre and religious works , marked by the influence of critical realism.

1893

Bakst went to Paris , where he studied at the famous Academie Julian and the studio of the famous artist Jean-Leon Gerome.

1898

Became a member of the association "Neva Pickwickians", later renamed "World of Art" , actively participated in the design of the magazine with the same name.

1900s

He is engaged in easel painting and graphics , using the experience of various artistic movements - from salon academism to fauvism. He created portraits of his contemporaries, narrative paintings, landscapes and decorative panels.

1907

He wrote a cycle of landscapes and one of his most famous paintings - "Ancient Horror" .

from 1902

He worked as a stage designer for a number of productions for the Hermitage, Mariinsky and Alexandrinsky theaters in St. Petersburg.

1906

Carried out the general design of the exhibition of Russian art, organized by Sergei Diaghilev in the Paris Autumn Salon.

1910

Settled in Paris .

1914

He was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor . The Imperial Academy of Arts of St. Petersburg awarded him the title of academician.

1922–1924

The artist worked on the creation of drawings of fabrics and models of clothes , having a significant impact on the development of Parisian and American fashion.

December 27, 1924

He died and was buried in the Batignolles cemetery in Paris.
