Born in Vilna (Russian Empire, now Lithuania) in an aristocratic landowner family.
Educated in Warsaw, St. Petersburg and Paris. Lived in Riga and St. Petersburg. Then in his Polissya estate.
Gained wide popularity after moving to Warsaw.

Albums "A man of high origin", "Neighbour's dinner"; the series "Pan Atanazy Skarupka the Progressive Man", "Pan Eugene", "The Miser" were published in the "Vilna Album".

Participated in the Polish uprising.
Around 1875
He settled on the territory of the Austrian Empire in Krakow, where he tried himself in journalism.
1878—1880
He published articles in the magazine "Łowiec", where he also posted his poem "Tydzień poleski".

Died in Krakow.

The first collection of Bartels' songs appeared in Krakow.
