Nikodim Silivanovich

1834 – 1919

Painter, portrait painter, created icons, decorated temples. He devoted more than thirty years of his life to the art of mosaics. He worked in easel painting, created plot compositions. In his works he often depicted representatives of the common people.

The works of Nikodim Silvanovich are presented in museum and private collections, churches in Lithuania, Russia, Belarus. Most of the surviving graphic and pictorial works of the master are in the collection of the Lithuanian Art Museum in Vilnius.

He lived and worked in Vilna and his native Tsintsevichi.

December 13th, 1834

Born in the village of Tsintsevichi, Vileika district, Vilna province (now Vileika district, Minsk region), into a peasant family.

1850

He was admitted to the five-class noble school in the town of Molodechno.

1855

He left to study at the drawing school of the St. Petersburg Society for the Encouragement of Artists.

1856–1863

He entered the department of portraiture of the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg.

1864

After completing his studies, the artist left for his homeland.

1864–1865

He worked on icons of St. Alexander Nevsky and portraits of the Sovereign Emperor in the Vilna province.

1864–1866

He lived in Vilna, traveled to Tsintsevichi, got married, painted portraits and genre paintings, created icons, and decorated churches.

1866

The artist moved to St. Petersburg and applied for admission to the mosaic department of the Imperial Academy of Arts.

1867–1869

Participated in the performance of a number of important mosaic works, for example, the mosaic icon "Savior Almighty" for the Tomb of the Princes Pozharsky in the Spaso-Efimiev Monastery in Suzdal.

Early 1870s

He was involved in the decoration of St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg.

November 1876

The artist was awarded the title of academician of mosaics.

1877–1894

He painted several religious compositions for the church in Eznas.

1890s

He took part in the design of the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in St. Petersburg.

1901

He moved to a permanent place of residence in Birshtany, where he equipped a small workshop and devoted all his free time to painting.

1914

With the outbreak of World War I, the artist moved to Tsintsevichi.

1919

He died in Tsintsevichi.

2009

A memorial sign dedicated to Silivanovich was erected in Tsintsevichi.
