Naive Art / Primitivism

Naive art includes works that are very similar in perception to children's drawings created by folk craftsmen or self-taught artists. Immediacy in the perception of the world, simplicity of plots, sincerity and conventionality of images - all these are the characteristics that unite this style.

The founder of the naive style is Henri Rousseau. His work was not related to art, he wrote his first work at the age of 42, having retired. Basically, the artists of primitivism do not have an art education, they do art in their free time, depicting what they see around them. Naivist_ki do not strive to develop their creativity or draw professionally, observing the canons and artistic rules. In the images of the world, the artists rely on their feelings, without turning artistic practice into a profession. It is important to note that the naivist is closed in his own world, within the framework of his own idea and style. It also means that the way to explore the world is through the prism of your personality, your image or the appearance of the people around you.

Common themes among primitive art are “eternal”, universal: birth, death, love, home, portraits and self-portraits, scenes of celebrations or feasts. Everything that reflects the atmosphere of joy, comfort, security or peace. The bright color, attention to detail, fabulous motifs, joyful atmosphere and a romantic look at everyday life are also unifying. The works do not imply the presence of deep symbolism and references, which makes them understandable to the general public.

Alyona Kish became a representative of the naive Belarusian art. The artist painted bright little girls, learned how to make carpets. The inhabitants of her village decorated their dwellings with colorful fairy-tale drawings. As payment, the artist took only food. The three most popular plots are “Paradise”, “Letter to the Beloved” and “Maiden on the Waters”.

Since 1947, there has been a folk club “Kontur” in Minsk, representing naive art, which includes about 30 people. Many of the participants have repeatedly participated in international plein-airs and exhibitions dedicated to primitive art.

The National Historical Museum contains a collection of naive art, which includes 100-120 paintings, 28 graphic works by Theodos Dudo, about 70 pieces of wooden sculpture by such artists as Ivan Suprunchik, Pupko, Olshevsky and others.

Representatives of Belarusian naive art: Margarita Sayfugalieva, Nikolai Tarasyuk, Vasily Zhernosek.
