Reuben Frumak

Artist, painter, representative of the Leningrad school of painting.

The paintings of Reuben Frumak are kept in the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg and in private collections in many countries around the world. Three paintings by the artist ("Self-Portrait", "Landscape with a Tower", "Still Life in the Studio", 1973) are presented in the corporate collection of Belgazprombank OJSC.

Born in the town of Chashniki, Lepel district (Vitebsk province, Russian Empire, now a city in the Vitebsk region, Republic of Belarus) in a Jewish family.

1916

He moved to Vitebsk and studied at a labor school.

Since 1920

He studied at the Vitebsk People's Art School, which was organized in 1918 by the commissioner of the College of Arts in the Vitebsk province, artist Marc Chagall.

1925-1928

He moved to Moscow, where he continued his studies at VKHUTEMAS - VKHUTEIN.

1928–1930

He was a member and exhibitor of the Moscow youth society of artists "Rost", which was founded by graduates and senior students of VKHUTEIN. The society held two exhibitions: in the spring of 1928 and in the spring of 1929.

Since 1930

Lived in Leningrad; was a member of the association of Leningrad artists “Circle of Artists” (existed in 1926–1932), whose goal was to improve professional skills based on the assimilation of the traditions of world art and formal experimentation.

1932

He joined the Leningrad branch of the Union of Soviet Artists (LOSSKh).

During the Great Patriotic War, he served in the 3rd separate rifle battalion under the SMERSH Counterintelligence Directorate of the Leningrad Front. Assistant Battalion Commander; captain. He was awarded the Order of the Red Star, medals “For the Defense of Leningrad” and “For the Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945.”

In the post-war period, Reuben Frumak continued to actively work and exhibit.

April 30, 1978

The artist died and was buried at the Preobrazhenskoye Jewish Cemetery in St. Petersburg.
