Born in the village of Zalyadynye (Ivanovsky district, Brest region, BSSR, today the Republic of Belarus).
In 1980 he graduated from the Belarusian Technological Institute. CM. Kirov in Minsk. From 1980 to 1990 he was a member of the Evening Minsk photo club.
During this period, he participated in the Photo Manifesto: Contemporary Photography in the USSR project (Manezh, Moscow), dedicated to the 150th anniversary of photography, as well as in a number of club photo exhibitions in Belarus and in other exhibition projects.
At this time, series and projects of both documentary works - "Phototandem", "City Celebration", "Light and Shadows", and photomontage photographs - "XX-Century", "Associations", "Wedding Moments", "Premonition of Fate" are being created. and others.
From 1991 to 2003 he was not actively involved in photography. In 2003 he returned to photography with his solo exhibition "Shards" at the NOVA Gallery (Minsk).
He is one of the organizers and the first chairman of the Belarusian public association "Photo Art" (2003). During this period, he created a series of digital documentary photographs: “People of Egypt”, “Portrait with a Portrait”, “Walks around the City”, “City and People” and others, as well as a series of digital montage works “Inner Worlds”, “Fantasy of Egypt”, "Blinds" and others. Four author's photo albums were published: “Photographs of Past Years”, “People of Egypt”, “Faces”, “Minsk. City and people.
Vadim Kachan's photo album “Photographs of Past Years” (2005) is the first edition of an album-book in modern Belarus dedicated to the work of the photographer. It includes both photographs of the author, made in the 80s of the last century, and his stories "Puzzles of the Past".

Since 2007 he has been teaching photography.
