Ludmila Rusova

1954 – 2010

Artist, one of the key representatives of the Belarusian performance. Author of the first performance in Belarus.

She was a member of the creative associations "Pluralis", "Form".

Ludmila Rusova is a legend of Belarusian art and a performance pioneer whose name is associated with the development and popularization of performance practices in Belarus. Performance was present in the creative biography of Lyudmila Rusova even before the actual term came into use in the Belarusian art community. Through "trips out of town" in student times, the work "Mirror Cross ½" (Georgia, 1989) and actions dedicated to Kazimir Malevich ("Suprematist Resurrection of Kazimir", 1988 - Vitebsk, 1989 - Minsk, 1990 - Moscow), realized in co-authorship with Igor Kashkurevich, Lyudmila Rusova mastered this new language of art, its properties and possibilities.

In the 1990s, a full-fledged center of contemporary art, similar to those that arose in other post-socialist countries, never opened in Belarus. In a sense, the Sixth Line Gallery (1992-1998) took on a similar function. Ludmila Rusova's performance "After", shown in the last days of the gallery's existence, fully reflected the hopelessness and impenetrability of the near future.

Lyudmila Rusova, defining herself as a post-structuralist, in her works nevertheless invariably leans towards metaphysics with its absolutes and belief in eternal truths, which is reflected in textual form in the book of texts, manifestos and poems "Through and Through" (1999) she published.

Lived and worked in Minsk.
